How to Decoupage a Family Dollar Metal Flower and Make it Awe-Inspiring!

Are you looking to create something that stands out from the everyday? Do you want to turn a mundane Family Dollar metal flower into something awe-inspiring? If so, you’re in the right place! Decoupage is the answer. This form of art is relatively easy to pick up and can be used to transform any object into a show-stopping masterpiece. In no-time, you’ll be able to craft a decor piece that speaks to your individual style and aesthetic. So, let’s get started!

Supplies Needed:

  • Family Dollar Metal Flower (or any metal flower)

  • Rustoleum White Primer

  • Napkins

  • Kitchen Cleaning Sponges

  • Mod Podge

  • Brushes (one to apply the Mod Podge. One to push the napkin into the ridges of the metal flower petals - A cheap bristle brush works the best)

  • Baby Wipes

  • Rope or an embellishment to put in the center

  • Spray ? (if you are using this outside)

Instructions:

  1. Since the metal flower was black, I had to use Rustoleum White Primer. You want your background to be either white or cream. This way the napkins will really pop on the metal flower.

  2. The great thing about this Metal Flower is that it comes apart with a twist of a screw. This makes it much easier to decourage each flower petal.

  3. Decide on a theme for your napkins: Sea/Nautical, Flowers, Coordinating Colors, Patriotic, etc. The possibilities are endless. Or just use the same napkin for all petals!

  4. Make a pattern of each section of the flower petals.

  5. Decide on which napkins to use for each section and cut out your flower petals. Be sure that if your flower has a direction that you cut out the same direction. (just like a sewing pattern)

  6. Using mod podge, glue each section. Be sure to keep your fingers cleaned, otherwise you can pull up a piece of the napkin on one of the petals.

Helpful Hints:

  • Be sure to remove all the layers from the main print of the napkin. Most napkins are either 2-ply or 3-ply. If you don’t, when you mod podge the napkin to the flower petal, the top layer may not adhere to the flower petal.

  • Once the napkin has been attached to the petal, use a bristle brush to pounce the napkin into the grooves of the flower petal.

  • I cut up a Kitchen Sponge into four pieces. This makes a great applicator for the mod podge. Be careful if you are using a sponge brush because it can leave black pieces from the sponge on your project.

  • You don’t have to decoupage to the middle of the metal flower.

  • Use jute rope or embellishment to cover of the center of the top petal.

  • If you are using the Metal Flower outside, be sure and apply a coat of varnish or sealer.

Decoupage is a fun and easy way to turn everyday objects from ordinary to extraordinary. All it takes is a few basic steps and a few napkins to bring beautiful plants into your home. By combining the steps of prepping the metal flower, adding glue, layering napkins and finishing with a mod podge, you can create a unique piece of art. Not only can you make something beautiful and unique, but once you know the basics, the possibilities are endless.
