The Birth of "Jesus Loves Me"
The Warner sisters, Anna (1827 - 1915) and Susan (1819 - 1885) were born to wealthy parents in New York. After their father, who was a successful lawyer, lost most of his fortune in the Panic of 1837. The family decided to move to their summer home on Connecticut Island which is near West Point Academy. In 1849, the Warner sisters began writing to support their family.
Anna’s poem “Jesus Loves Me” first appeared in her sister Susan’s book, Say and Seal, published in 1860. The poem was recited in the book by the main character, Mr.Linden, to comfort a dying boy, easing his fears with its gentle assurance of Jesus’ love.
The Warner Sisters and Their Legacy
One of Susan’s readers, composer William Bradbury, added a melody and the now-famous chorus to Anna’s poem. This version of "Jesus Loves Me" was published in 1862 in Bradbury’s hymnal The Golden Sower. William Bradbury composed other hymns like: “He Leadeth Me”, “Sweet Hour of Prayer” and “Just As I Am”.
Encouraged by their uncle, Thomas Warner, who was a chaplain and professor at West Point Academy, the sisters began teaching a Bible study to the cadets. For decades, they held classes at their home, where Susan taught, and Anna served refreshments. After Susan’s death, Anna continued the classes until her own passing in 1915. Their dedication to the spiritual well-being of the cadets earned them the honor of being the only civilian women buried in West Point Cemetery. It is believed that the last class of cadets before Anna’s death was Dwight D. Eisenhower.
