Have you ever made a bowl with fabric scraps and glue?

I couldn’t wait to make a fabric bowl that I kept seeing on Instagram. I got the inspiration for this project from Kristen Peterson of Altered States Studios. These bowls/containers are really easy to make but I must warn you, this project is very messy. She has a wonderful demonstration video on her blog. After watching the video, I couldn’t wait to make my own bowl.

Supplies needed for this project:

  • Scraps of Fabric

  • Container like a metal can, empty milk carton, mason jar, balloon, etc.

  • Saran Wrap

  • School Glue

  • Rubberband, Washi Tape or a ribbon

  • Foam Brush or bristle brush

Here are the steps needed to make a Fabric Bowl:

  1. Cut your scrap pieces into small squares or rectangles before you start. This will make thing easier when you have glue all over your fingers.

  2. Completely cover your container with saran wrap and secure with a rubber band at the top.

  3. Pour glue into a small container so that it’s easier to use.

  4. Using a foam brush or old paintbrush, begin adding a good amount of glue to the bottom of the saran wrap.

  5. For the bottom of the container, you start with a piece of fabric that is larger than the bottle of your container that you are using for a mold. Although for the bowl where I wanted the fabric to show on the inside, I used long strips of fabric instead of a large piece of fabric.

  6. Once you have glued the bottom piece of fabric down, you continue the process by layering different pieces of scrap fabric around your mold.

  7. When you’ve reached the top, you are going to start over and completely cover the bowl with a second layer of scraps. For the second layer, you need to cover the bottom of the mold with fabric scraps as well.

  8. Allow your bowl to dry overnight because removing it from the mold.

Just a few hints when making your bowl:

  1. I found that it was much easier to work on top of a craft mat instead of a piece of paper. After a while, there is so much glue that everything starts sticking together.

  2. If you are making a bowl. you will need to make your first layer with the right side of the fabric facing the inside. Then when you add your second layer, you use the fabric facing out.

  3. If you are using a mason jar, don’t cover over the indention at the top of the jar. I did this and had to trim my bowl because I couldn’t get it out.

  4. Even if you think that you don’t need to add a rubber band to the top to secure the saran wrap…I highly suggest that you do it anyway because when you are doing the first layer, some of the saran wrap can lift up.

For my first bowl, I used the bottom of a 1/2 gallon milk carton. The second bowl I use a mason jar because I wanted it to be more like a pencil holder.

While I was at Dollar Tree, I purchased a fabric strip roll for $5.00, this way I didn’t have to decide on coordinating fabrics or colors. My plan was to use an inflated balloon to make a bowl but as I was looking for a balloon, I saw a small plastic trash can that had purchased at Dollar Tree before Christmas. This was the perfect size and shape to make a bowl.

Because this is a bowl, more of the inside showed. So for this bowl, the first layer of fabric is placed with the wrong side facing the outside. For the next layer, I glued the fabric with the right side on the outside. I absolutely love this bowl…it’s my favorite of all three bowls that I made and I can’t wait to make more!
