"Jesus Loves Me" Thrift Store Wood Panel

I have always loved the children’s song “Jesus Loves Me” which was written by Anna Warren in 1860.  This hymn has such a simple message but sometimes I think people find it hard to believe.

I made this small canvas to remind me everyday that “Jesus Loves Me”.

Supplies:

  • 5 ½ x 5 ½” wooden canvas purchased from a thrift store

  • Gesso (to cover the image on the canvas

  • Folk Art Paint:  Vintage White

  • Dick Blick Paint:  Pink Deep and Pink Light

  • Matte Mod Podge

  • Cardboard

  • Vintage Photo Distress Ink

  • Jute Rope

  • Key

  • “Jesus Loves Me” vintage hymnal sheet

Instructions:

  • If you purchase a wood panel from a vintage store, be sure and clean the panel and then paint it with gesso.  Gesso helps to seal the image from showing through.

  • After I allowed the 2 layers of gesso to dry, paint the wood panel with the color or your choice.  I used Folk Art Vintage White.

  • I tore the edges of the hymnal page for a more rustic look.  You can use scissors or a paper trimmer to cut out the image.  I attached the vintage “Jesus Loves Me” to the wood panel with matte mod podge.

  • I used Vintage Photo Distress Ink to add a touch of rustic charm on the edges of the wood panel.

  • I cut out a heart from cardboard.  I tore off the top layer to reveal the under layer of cardboard.

  • I painted the heart with several shades of pink on the cardboard heart.  After it was dry, I dry brushed vintage white to highlight the top edges of the cardboard.

  • I glued the heart to the wood panel making sure the title “Jesus Loves Me” was the main focus.

  • I cut an approximately 96” length of jute twine and folded it in half.

  • Thread the jute twine through the key ornament. Tie the jute twine into a knot above the key.

  • Lay the key on top of the heart and then wrap each section of the jute twine around the wood several times.

  • Tie the jute twine into a bow.

  • The project is finished.  You could also add a touch of gold foil to the edges of the wood panel.  You can also use a crackle medium to the canvas for a more rustic look.

I love how this wood panel turned out and the best thing is that it didn’t cost much money.
