Dollar Tree Sunflower Plate: Recreate the Mackenzie Childs Vibe

About a month ago, I saw a Facebook Video from Olivia’s Romantic Home where she took a Dollar Tree Sunflower plate and transformed it into a Mackenzie Childs inspired decorative plate. I love Mackenzie Childs products unfortunately my pocketbook does not!!!  I wanted to add a bit of glamour and whimsy to my home decor, so…off to Dollar Tree I go to up-cycle a Dollar Tree Sunflower plate!!!

Supplies Needed:

  • Dollar Tree Plate

  • Black and White Acrylic Paint

  • Paintbrushes

  • 1” painters’ tape

  • Waterproof Black Marker

  • Gold Acrylic Paint Pen

Let’s Create a Mackenzie Childs Inspired Home Decor Piece

  • Make sure that the plate is clean.  I took a baby wipe to get off any dirt and dust that was on the plate.

  • Lay a line of painter’s tape across the plate.  I started off about 2” from the edge of the plate because I didn’t want one of the strips to be right in the center.

  • The easiest way to make strips on the plate, is to lay a second strip beside the first on and remove the first strip. Don’t throw this away because you will use this for the rest of the plate.

  • Using the black marker, draw your lines.  Don’t worry because you are going to cover the squares with black paint and add highlights of gold to the White squares.

  • When you are making your marks, be sure and not to cover over the design on the plate.

  • Once you are finished with your strips one directions, turn the plate around and complete the checkered board pattern.

  • Give the plate two coats of black paint and allow each layer to dry completely.

  • With a dry brush and white acrylic paint, add just a dash of paint to each black square.

  • For the final touches to my Dollar Tree Sunflower Plate, I used a DecoArt Acrylic Paint Pen in gold and highlighted all the squares plus the rim of the plate.

Adding whimsy and sophistication to your sunflower plate upcycle is all about infusing your own personal touch. Instead of a black checker board, maybe you use navy instead. If sunflowers doesn’t fit in your home decor, choose a different plate from Dollar Tree or purchase a plate at a garage sale or thrift store. So unleash your creativity and let you home shine with the artistry of Mackenzie Childs.
