Step By Step Guide To Crafting Wood Planter Decorations

First, paint the Wooden Arrows with 2 coats of Rustoleum White Linen Chalk Paint and allow to dry before adding the decorative paint.

Last step is to outline the arrows with a Faber Castell Pen Fineliner (Medium) and added white highlights (lines, dots, swirls) with a Posca White Pen.

Now, for the fun stuff!

Polka Dot Planter Stake

Make Red and Blue dots using a medium and small sponge dabber. It’s best to dip the sponge into the paint, then dab it onto your palette or a piece of scrap paper just to get off the excess paint. Try to be random with the placement of the circles. (This is the hardest thing for me to do!)

Red and White Stripes

Add stripes with painters tape or washi tape. I didn’t have a pattern. I just started making lines at an angle and used another piece of painters tape as a spacer. This way you get even stripes. If you’re brave, just paint the stripes!!!

I used Waverly Crimson Chalk Paint to paint every other stripe. Allow this to dry before add the blue triangle.

After it’s dry (at least I thought it was dry), I added a strip of painters tape at the bottom of the triangle so that I would get a crisp edge. Unfortunately, when I removed the painters tape, it pulled up some of the red stripe. I didn’t panic…just added more Waverly Crimson Chalk Paint and it looked great!

Blue with Stars Stake

Cut out stars on Cricut or Silhouette Machine.

  1. I made a template of the shape of the bottom part of the arrow (approximately 3” x 9”) and then added my stars.

  2. Once I had my stars where I wanted them, I deleted the template and highlighted the stars and attached them together. This way the Cricut will cut the stars out in the position that they have placed on the template.

  3. Cut out the stars and attached to the wooden arrow.

Or, you can just cut out white stars and attached to the top of the blue painted bottom of the arrow. (I thought of this after I had already done it the other way)

If you are using the stars as a mask, add them to the wooden arrow. Paint the bottom of the wooden arrow with two coats of Folk Art Home Decor Chalk Paint in the color “Nautical” over the vinyl stars. Allow to dry and carefully and gently remove the vinyl stars.

Paint the triangle with two coats of Waverly Crimson Chalk Paint.

Finishing Touches

  1. Add a line of E6000 glue to the back of each wooden arrow.

  2. Add a line of Hot Glue right beside the E6000 (this allows the skewer or dowel rod to adhere quickly while the E6000 is drying).

  3. Cut your BBQ skewer or dowel rod to the length that you want (I made it a bit longer because it’s always easy to trim but not to add) and attached to the back of the arrow.

  4. Using a staple gun, attach 2-3 staples to make sure that everything stays together.

  5. If you are using the Dollar Tree Patriotic Wooden Planter Stakes outside, be sure and add a few coats of sealer. I like to use Rustoleum Clear Topcoat Spray

That’s all there is to creating a quick and easy Patriotic Planter stakes using Dollar Tree Wooden Arrows. I just love the way they turned out!

Don’t forget to PIN this project for later!
