You are a God’s Masterpiece: Lessons from Mrs. Potato Head
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”
Do you ever feel like Mrs. Potato Head? Out-of-shape, nose too big. Maybe you feel like your eyes are too wide for your face or you just feel like all your features are in the wrong places or just misshapen.
Remember when you were a kid and you would put the ears on Mrs. Potato Head where the arms are supposed to go? Or how about the tongue on top of her head? We were creating a unique masterpiece of our own!!!
The History of Mrs. Potato Head
One key aspect to understanding how to fully embrace your uniqueness lies in exploring the rich history of Mrs. Potato Head. Born in 1952, Mrs. Potato Head was the first toy to be advertised on television and the first toy to include interchangeable body parts. Created by George Lerner, Mrs. Potato Head originally consisted of just the plastic body parts that could be stuck into an actual potato. It wasn't until 1964 that Hasbro began selling the plastic potato body we know today.
When Mr. Potato Head first came out, kids used an actual potato or any other vegetable that they could find. Parents began to complain to the toy company because they would find rotten vegetables in their kids room. So they later created a styrofoam body and then the plastic one that they sell today.
You Are A Masterpiece - God’s Creative Workmanship
According to the dictionary, Merriam-Webster defines a masterpiece as “a work done with extraordinary skill; especially: a supreme intellectual or artistic achievement.”
A masterpiece doesn’t have to be a piece of art, it can be anything done with extraordinary skill. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are masterpieces created by God. LIke the intricate details of a masterpiece artwork, we are uniquely crafted with purpose and God’s good works.
A masterpiece doesn’t happen overnight. The creator takes His time to make sure that everything is just right.
A masterpiece is very detailed.
A masterpiece is a one and only creation. Even though there may be reproductions, it doesn’t include the details of the brushstrokes, vibrancy of color or the love from the Creator.
A masterpiece is a work of art to the Creator.
A masterpiece has no mistakes.
A masterpiece is unique, special and loved.
We are God’s work of art. He created and is continuing to create us in His image, if we allow Him to mold us!
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Psalm 139 tells us that God knows every single thing about us, and nothing was or is hidden from him. God doesn’t make mistakes and He doesn’t make junk. You are God’s piece of art. You have been carefully design by the Creator.
Many times we don’t see ourselves as God’s masterpiece because we are trying to compare ourselves to the world’s standards and not God’s. We focus on the negative things in our lives.
Here are a few other passages to encourage and reassure you, that you are indeed God’s masterpiece.
“I will praise You Lord; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are Your works…” (Psalm 139:14)
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” (Luke 12:6-7)
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
So remember, you are God’s masterpiece!
It's important to embrace your uniqueness and allow yourself to grow and adapt. Embracing what makes you different is what sets you apart and makes you stand out in a crowd. Remember, no one else is exactly like you, so embrace your quirks, flaws, and strengths. Also, remember that “God don’t make no junk”!
You have been created as a one-of-a-kind creation, perfectly designed for a specific purpose. So embrace the beauty of being uniquely loved by your Creator.
